My Philosophy

As golf course superintendents, it is our responsibility to provide our members and guests with impeccable playing conditions while maintaining our commitment to the environment.  A difficult task, no doubt, but it is our duty to do our part in this world of environmental change.

Communication and keeping members and guests "in the know" is the key to any successful program.  Keep them informed on the "hows and whys" of what we do greases the wheels of a well maintained golf course.

Golf course maintenance is all about dealing with the elements.  Mother Nature produces harsh conditions for fine turf.  Heavy rain, no rain, heat, heavy soils, tree encroachment.  All these are important to plant health, but it all begins and ends with water management, both in application and drainage.  Without proper management the turf health will suffer.  With this unhealthy turf comes increased pesticide use to attempt to prevent the inevitable death of a number of plants followed by the increased use of fertilizers to assist in recovery in the areas with turf loss.  By managing our individual micro climates we can win this battle and reduce our pesticide and fertilizer usage.

Any successful maintenance program is based on proven modern practices, scientific research and their common sense implementation.  Every course and every region is different.  What may work at one course may not at another just ten miles down the road.  Common sense is the twine that pulls it all together.

The final piece of my philosophy is education.  We must continue to learn through any means possible, whether it is through university research, other superintendents or just plain failure.  If we do not continue to learn, others will pass you by.  Always be at the forefront of your industry.

Current Employment

Chautauqua Golf Club

I have been the golf course superintendent at Chautauqua Golf Club since April, 2002.  Chautauqua Golf Club is a 36 hole public facility owned by the prestigious Chautauqua Institution near beautiful Chautauqua Lake in Western New York.  Between our daily fee guests and our 260 members, we are host to just under 30,000 rounds annually.  Our two courses consist of the Lake Course, originally designed by Seymour Dunn in 1914 as a 9 hole course that was redesigned and expanded to 18 holes by Donald Ross in 1924, and the Hill Course, a Xen Hassenplug design completed in 1994.

I have been very blessed to be part of  the Chautauqua Golf Club and Chautauqua Institution team.  I work for and with great people.

NJCAA National Championship

Chautauqua Golf Club has been home for the NJCAA Division III National Championship for over 12 years.  The longevity of this event at our course is a testament to our tournament prep and and conditions.  Players and coaches alike rave about the condition of the course and the consistent roll of the greens.  We look forward to many more years as host.

Projects

Nearly all projects at Chautauqua Golf Club are completed in-house.  The advantage is cost savings, the disadvantage is time to completion and it detracts from our routine maintenance schedule.  Projects over the last 10 years have included:

  • Construction of 25 acre Learning Center

  • Nearly 9,000 feet of drainage

  • 23 bunkers renovated

  • 9 tees leveled

  • 8 new tees constructed

  • 2400 yards of stone paths

  • 2450 yards of paved paths

  • Irrigation pump upgrade

  • Tree removal for turf health

  • Re-grassing of bare soil left from tree removal

  • Implementation of "low maintenance" or "native" areas

  • Perennial garden construction

  • Working toward Audubon certification

  • Construction of an English Lawn Bowling green

Previous Employment

Elkdale Country Club

Elkdale Country Club is a semi-private course located in Salamanca, New York.  A relatively short course, the difficulty lies in the slippery greens and undulating terrain.

I was employed by Elkdale Country Club from 1995 to 2002.  During my tenure, with the help of the Board of Governors, my assistant and our crew, we transformed Elkdale from an mediocre local course to a pristinely maintained destination.  We were known for our quick, consistent greens and perfectly manicured turf.

Accomplishments at Elkdale included the purchase and installation of a then state of the art Toro Osmac irrigation system, several drainage projects, and the implementation of my management program, leading to vastly improved turf health and playing conditions.

Elkdale Country Club is still one of my favorites and dear to my heart.  I enjoyed my time there working with a wonderful staff and Board of Governors.
